Food

Grow your own party: the Abbey Gardens Summer Fete

AG-Summer-Fair-2015-blog

It’s nice when a grand day out comes straight from the neighbourhood. We’ve had delicious food made from our produce by Vegan Peasant. Our very own brass player, Cath French, has brought along along Regent Community Brass and friends. We’ve had stories from the land: writer Neil Fraser has read from his book Over The Border: The Other East End. We’ve had a cabin-full of local history to delve into. Our volunteers and neighbours have been baking for our tea and cake stall and contributing quiz questions. There’s been a treasure hunt around the garden (enjoyed so much by our young gardeners and visitors that they wanted to do it all again). There’s been portrait drawing by illustrator Fred Apps. And we’ve had a cheery group of Newham Volunteers helping on our stalls.

A big Abbey Gardens thank-you to everyone who’s given time and brought talents, to all of our regular gardeners and behind-the-scenes volunteers who make the space beautiful and productive, a round of applause for our administrator, fundraiser and ideas person Vicki Lewis, who organised the event – and a wave to everyone who came along to enjoy the day.

The Big Lunch: Sunday 7 June, 12 noon – 3pm

FOAG-big-lunch-blog-graphic_web_600px

Have a lovely lunch, enjoy the garden and meet the neighbours!

Bring a dish to share, whether it’s something to go on the BBQ, a salad or savoury for the table, a pudding or a cake. There’ll be prizes for the tastiest food. We’ll provide the soft drinks.

And there’ll be food for thought as well as goodies for the table: a talk on container planting by volunteer gardener and innovator Charlie Seber, who designed our greenhouse.

More on The Big Lunch here.

Pumpkin Fest – a celebration of all things pumpkin

Pumpkinfest_blog

Cakes that looked like pumpkins. Cakes with pumpkins in them. Carved pumpkins. Pumpkin facts and stories. Cheffing with pumpkins. Pumpkins painted on faces. Pumpkin quizzes. Pumpkin cushions. The Pumpkinhead photo prop. Our gardeners dressed in pumpkin colours… It really has been all things pumpkin at the Pumpkinfest.

A massive Abbey Gardens thank-you to Vegan Peasant, the Regent Community Brass Band, our competition judges, our councillors and community police for giving out the prizes, all who gave prizes including the lovely Sawmill café, our workshop leaders, our stall and setup crews, our Chair, Mike, for MC duties, everyone who made and contributed products for the honesty stall including gherkins by Dasha, teas by Dasha and a team of teabag-filling volunteers, chutney by Freya, food stories cushions and pumpkin pun cards by Lydia and of course, Charlie’s amazing comfrey liquid, Hamish for sharing gardening know-how… and most importantly, our awesome events team.

Congratulations too to our competition and raffle prize winners.

And thank you to everyone who visited and made it another busy, cheerful event.

If you missed the Pumpkinfest, you can listen to it! Here’s a link to a radio feature by Pete Day from NuSound Radio 92FM for his Community Hour show.

Hamish with pumpkin_lo

gherkins

Would you like gherkins with that?

bottled cucumbers_low

Food. It’s what brings the 20 plus nationalities gardening at Abbey Gardens together. A conversation by a veg, fruit or herb plant, discussion of the gardening session’s harvest – you’ll hear as many recipes as you see people. Gherkins, bottled with proper Czech know-how by Dasha, are back on the menu this year. We’re looking forward to them and there may be some on the honesty stall at our Pumpkin Fest on Saturday 27 September 1pm-4pm. If our garden volunteers haven’t got there first (they’re very good indeed)…

Be a pumpkin head at the Mayor’s Newham Show on Sunday 13 July!

Gardeners’ lunch

Dasha's pumpkin curry + garden_lo

One of the joys of growing your own is cooking with local, seasonal ingredients. And so, on an unexpectedly-sunny Autumn day, here is Dasha’s pumpkin curry, cooked for sharing at an outdoor lunch.
