Welcome to Abbey Gardens, a community garden in West Ham
surrounding part of the ruins of a
12th century abbey.

There are free garden club sessions and new gardeners are always welcome. The garden is open to visitors from dawn till dusk.

Community fun at the Chilli Festival

What a turnout for the Chilli Festival! It’s been lovely to see old friends and new friends from all corners of our community trying delicious cakes, bakes and savouries, making mini chilli hats and listening to mellow music. And our fashion-fabulous scarecrow costume winner got a garden goodie bag to fill up.

A massive Abbey Gardens thank-you to singer Anna Aarons and guitarist James Tony Bennett. Applause, too, to all of our event volunteers, lending their time, energy and skills to organisation, cooking, publicity, activities, setting up and clearing up.

If you’ve visited the event and would like to join in with our free drop-in gardening sessions, there’s still plenty to do before the end of the season. Sessions are on Tuesdays 1pm-3pm, Thursdays 4pm-7pm and Saturdays 11am-4pm. Drop by at any point in the session; tools and gloves are provided.

Abbey Gardens does The Big Lunch

From veteran visitors to our littlest gardeners, we’ve had people of all ages at the garden for The Big Lunch. And we’ve had food from all corners of the world: Freshly-made Chinese dumplings, lamingtons, quiche, pizzas made in a portable pizza oven… all in weather that’s brought the Mediterranean to West Ham.

We’ve even done some gardening – watering has been a great way of cooling down (grown-ups with the hose, kids with water pistols).

Welcome, all, a big thank-you to our lovely singer Lucy May Walker, to Cath French for donating her design skills to the publicity, to everyone who cooked and helped – and we just love the banner drawn by one of our youngest supporters.

Our picnic rug shows food stories collected in 2012. We hope that today has made new food stories for everyone who came along.

Join us for some gardening or just to enjoy the space. Our gardening sessions are on Tuesdays 1pm-3pm, Thursdays 4pm-7pm and Saturdays 11am-4pm.

A warm welcome at the Winter Fest

On a blustery winter Saturday, it’s been a pleasure to welcome neighbours and visiting gardeners for seasonal activities and festive cheer. Nina’s wreath-making workshop has been a true community effort, with materials sourced from neighbourhood gardens. Our Chair Torange’s soap-making workshop has shown new uses for the things we grow at the garden. There’s been carol-singing with Members of All Saints Chorus and our cake stall crew have served baked goodies and warming Winter drinks.

Thank you to all who baked, helped and anchored the marquee!

And we’ve had visits from two garden club leaders…  Welcome to our new garden club leader Aiste, pictured above, who brings a new range of skills and experience to the garden and a massive thank-you to Hamish, our garden club leader for the past few years, for all of his knowledge and hard work.

A very happy festive season to all of our gardeners, behind-the-scenes volunteers and friends.

Look out for news of monthly gardening sessions early in the new year ahead of our 2016 gardening season.

Gathering in

AGblog_storing and making

We grow things… and then there’s the gathering-in: the harvest, the storage and the knowledge.

We’ve packed our potatoes away out of the light and put tomatoes out to ripen. Some of us have been at the garden and others out to the Newham Community Gardens Network event at the lovely East Ham Nature Reserve, where we’ve compared notes with people from other garden projects and taken part in a Cordwainers Grow flax workshop.

So what’s next? To help shape our plans for the future, come along to our monthly meeting on Saturday 7 November at 2pm. And there’s our Winter celebration on Saturday 5 December – more information coming soon.

Meanwhile, there’s plenty of gardening still to do, with garden club sessions continuing through the month. So come along, get active and help prepare and plant for our next gardening year.

Bollywood comes to Bakers Row: Harvest Festival East

All corners of the community have got involved in this year’s Harvest Festival East. We’ve had  dance group Tridhara, led by Showmi Das, showing us harvest dances from Bangladesh, Bollywood dances and getting visitors involved in their workshops. Young people from the National Citizen Service Team Perham have led apple dunking, egg and spoon races – and been first up to join the dancing. Quirky Nature have made their fresh-pressed juices. And congratulations to Freya for winning the apple tart competition!

A big Abbey Gardens thank you to our volunteer chefs, who made delicious quiches, soup and salads, to our bakers and helpers, to Cath French for publicity, to former volunteer Emma for bringing home-grown apples, to garden club leader Hamish for being on hand with gardening wisdom and to all of our garden and behind-the-scenes volunteers who work so hard to make Abbey Gardens the beautiful place it is.

Our next event will be our Winter Celebration on Saturday 5 December.
