About the event
Come and learn about the basics of growing King Stropharia and Oyster mushrooms with different methods at Abbey Gardens!
This volunteer day will cover the basics of the mushroom life cycle with former mushroom farmers Harry and Sophie, including what it takes to successfully grow mushrooms, and how easily they can be incorporated into any garden.
We’ll be hands on as we prepare hessian bags with pasteurised straw to grow oyster mushrooms in shady spots at Abbey Gardens. This will be followed by learning about outdoor growing in woodchip beds with the amazing King Stropharia (or Winecap) mushrooms. This species of mushroom is perfectly suited to growing in and around other veg and plants in the woodchip mulch that is often applied, and we'll be incorporating this style of growing into some of the fruit tree beds at the back of the gardens.
Entry will be by donation and all materials prepared will be to help the community growing initiatives at Abbey Gardens.
