Bark mulch shifting turns a gardener’s thoughts to food. So I asked our garden club leader Chris if there was anything badly in need of harvesting that he would be glad for me to take away. I staggered off with a vast Chinese cabbage, wondering how on earth I was going to cook it (stir-fried, since you ask, with a Sunday roast – unconventional but it worked). Such discoveries are all part of the garden. I had avoided beetroot after too many nasty 1970s school salads but freshly-picked and roasted: yum! So if there’s anything you’d love to have a go at cooking but have never managed to grow, Chris is collecting suggestions for next season.
