New top soil

March 19th, 2008

A layer of top soil has arrived and has been thinly spread across the site. It smells a little bit of country site. The digger has now left and the site is empty and clear.

It is great to see the area cleard, and I 100% agree, it did bring the smell of the countryside to Stratford!
Considering it had been a mound of earth for many years, that was no wonder.

It gives some idea of the size of the Abbey, as it would seem the gate house was quite large, yet that only covered less than a quater of this exposed area.
The Abbey must have looked wonderfull, espicailly in an area where the tallest building at the time would have been a windmill.

As a bit of side interest, the road from Star lane to Canning Town will shut on the 8th April to allow for the Building of the New DLR Star Lane Station, and that is due for completion in November then the Buiders will move on to the next new station, Abbey Lane. (although West Ham Station is between this, the station there is built and just need some conversion for a DLR link)
